Rolf Los Angeles: Session Four

February 13th, 2009 Leave a comment Go to comments

My fourth Rolfing session in Los Angeles shifted gears a little bit. I see a little bit because according to many rolfer’s it is a big shift however I only experienced a slight shift in what was going on.

Supposedly, your first three or Rolfing sessions concentrate more on the aesthetic outer lining of the in connective muscle tissue. And the fourth session begins the more inner core work.

Rolfer’s call this “the active core” and it is the structures that lie closest to the spine at the body’s mid-level (so think areas around the hip).  Though I did know that this session was a little different I experience the same sensations of feeling muscles that were once tight (that I didn’t even know were tight), begin to release letting my bones and the muscles themselves almost shift in feel more room was created.

Basically Al worked on the inside of my legs started with my ankles although it up to what he called the pelvic floor with I like the area right below the butt.  He also worked on my hamstrings which was crazy.

When Al worked on my hamstrings he literally pulled to muscles apart. And even realize I had two major muscles in each hamstring and it’s a very hard experience described but I’ll do my best with the following:

Imagine doing Hatha the yoga for a full two hours and then go swimming.

And I know but I told you is hard to describe. Basically my hamstrings felt very stretched while very light at the same time. It was as if I had been doing yoga every day for 30 days.

The other cool thing about this session particular was the work done on the bottom of the pelvis. All through the week whenever I thought about my pelvis I was reminded of the lift that my rolfer performed and I instantly shifted my pelvis to the appropriate neutral position.

Also what’s interesting about this neutral pelvic position, is that it automatically engages my core Stomach muscles.  You know how in exercise videos or personal trainers tell you to activate your core, well I just thinking about my Rolfing session my core automatically activated on its own. It came as easily as breathing while I’m sleeping.

And this my friends is the thing that gets me most excited about Rolfing -the mind-body connection!
